Is the Marcy Olympic Surge Weight Bench MD-857 Right for Your Home Gym?
The Marcy Olympic Weight Bench MD-857, also known as the “Marcy Olympic Surge Bench” is a quality home gym solution, and one of the first pieces of gear I bought when I built my first home gym.
The reason I personally chose this weight bench for my first home gym is simple. It solves a variety of problems at a reasonable price.
The construction is solid for a home gym at this price point and the versatility it offers is stellar. If you’re ready to replace the gym, the MD-857 is a good start and will get you most of the way there in a very compact package.
Marcy is famous for producing a huge variety of fitness equipment from stationary cycles to weight sets. Their entry level home gyms are very popular for good reason and the MD-857 Olympic Surge bench is no exception.
Simply put, this multifaceted olympic weight bench offers full-body workout capacity at a very reasonable price.
With the reasonable weight limit and the options it offers, you can get really close to total gym replacement with just one purchase. It offers multiple options for upper body and lower body work and supports enough weight for most beginner to intermediate lifters.
Upper Body Work
When I hear the phrase, ‘Olympic bench,’ I think of upper body strength and the Marcy MD-857 offers plenty of torso sculpting options.
The bench is built for stability and the adjustable seatback and sliding platform allows for every chest and shoulder press variation you can think of, while the preacher curls support provides a great opportunity for arm sculpting.
The bar catch can support up to 300 pounds, which is more than the average lifter can bench press, but might be on the low side for serious powerlifters.
This is a great weight bench for beginner to intermediate lifters looking to replace their gym membership, but if you’re a serious powerlifter you might want to check out a more heavy duty bench.
Lower Body Work
What sets the Olympic Surge Bench apart from most entry level weight benches, is its capacity for lower body activation as well. Not only is there a rear-frame rack for squats, but there’s also a dual-function leg developer below the bench for leg extensions and hamstring curls!
The attached squat rack is one of the things that makes this bench such a great option for beginner home gym builders. Being able to get an upper and lower body workout with one piece of gear is super valuable and a squat rack is exactly what I want when I think of lower body workout.
Squats are awesome and I can personally attest to what a luxury it is not to have to wait in a squat rack line at the gym.
The included leg developer kicks the convenience of this home gym into high gear! The leg developer’s contoured rollers allow for comfortable leg extensions, while the upper pair is perfect for hamstring curls and glute activation.
The MD-857 is advertised as being able to support up to 300 pounds of weight plates, which can be easily stored on the convenient, built-in weight trees. 300 pounds is also the limit for user themselves.
This gives you a decent limit to start with and will probably be all you need unless you’re serious about powerlifting.
The MD-857’s functionality is undeniable, but what cements it as a centerpiece for any home gym is its compact design and durability.
The built to last, premium steel frame supports a seatback, sliding platform, and rollers made from rugged foam and vinyl material, which means no longer having to put up with frayed benches and deteriorating upholstery in crowded gyms.
I’m not talking about stiff, uncomfortable padding either. The Marcy Olympic Surge Weight Bench sports high-density foam pads that are 2 inches thick for added comfort and support!
On top of that, this is a great option for small spaces just because of how many exercises you can do with this one piece of equipment.
Getting started with anything, fitness or otherwise, can be a daunting task.
Trust me, I know.
I also know that it’s easier to achieve a new goal if the initial steps toward that goal are simple and easy to execute, especially when it comes to fitness. Rather than searching high and low for the right gym, I found that creating a personalized home gym, catered to my preferences was much more empowering.
The Marcy Olympic Surge weight bench md-857 makes that process easier because it checks so many boxes in terms of functionality and isn’t even complicated to assemble. There’s absolutely no reason to wait before making this marvelous piece of equipment the launching pad for your fitness goals!
The Marcy Olympic Surge weight bench is perfect whether you’re just getting started, or just getting serious!
